LANGUAGE CENTRE PROGRAMME
The Auburn High School Language Centre Programme is based on a series of thematic integrated units.
Language Centre Programme
The Auburn High School Language Centre Programme is based on a series of thematic integrated units. These units are designed to develop students’ language skills in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Each unit also incorporates specific vocabulary, grammatical focus and study skills. The units also aim to provide some Australian cultural knowledge, cross cultural comparisons and language to assist newly arrived students to adjust and settle into their new home. The program is designed to help build resilience and enable students to integrate and feel confident in their new school environment with journal writing, reflective pieces, small group and pair work to enable students to express their responses in a supportive atmosphere. Links are also made with the welfare team in order to ensure the newly arrived students welfare needs are addressed through sessions on matters such as hygiene, heathy sleep patterns, accessing the Australian health system, fire safety, water safety, and travel on public transport. Students are closely monitored to ensure that they are settling into their home living arrangements and managing their daily routine.
A key aim of the program is to prepare students to undertake the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education). Therefore, skills required for VCE are embedded in the program in the form of carefully scaffolded text response and comparative essays, an introduction to persuasive language, listening comprehension exercises and practice in oral presentation. Students are introduced to the language of VCE subjects and the structure of the writing required.
The Language Centre is housed in a separate unit on the first floor of the school which has cosy classrooms fitted out with overhead projectors, a small library, and access to dictionaries and class set texts. Students are also introduced to aspects of their new home through excursions to places of cultural and historical significance such as the Museum, the Botanical Gardens, the National Gallery, the Shrine of Remembrance, and further afield to places Ballarat.
