Principal’s Report – June 20, 2025

Congratulations, we’ve reached the halfway point of the academic year. Term 2 is ending, and a well-earned break awaits. There’s much to celebrate as we reflect on the achievements and milestones of the past ten weeks.

Parent Payments

I would like to thank the parents who have responded to Leo Pappas’, School Council President, message regarding parent payments. As well as curriculum funds being added to, there have been generous donations to our Building Fund and Library Fund. As Leo communicated this money will be used to ensure that our programs and facilities continue to improve. I would like to express my gratitude to parents for responding to Leo’s message.

International Students and Global Connections

Next term, Auburn High School will have over 60 international students in our programs. These students enrich our school community with their diverse perspectives and experiences. They come from countries including Vietnam, China, the USA, Cambodia, and Malaysia. Their brave decision to study abroad, often in a second language and within homestay environments, is truly commendable. Next term there will be several cultural events including a national dress fashion show. Thank you to Jean Zhang, Lushi Lin, and Roslyn Mills for all their guidance, and support for these students.

Year 12 Formal – A Night to Remember

On Thursday, June 12th, our Year 12 students celebrated their formal at The Luminaire in South Melbourne. The evening, coordinated by the Formal Committee with support from Mr McPherson, Ms Price, and a dedicated team of parents, was a resounding success. Students dazzled in their formal wear and enjoyed a night of celebration, laughter, and dancing. I’m incredibly proud of the Class of 2025 for the way they represented themselves and our school.

GAT and Senior School

The following week, on June 17th, our Year 11 and 12 students undertaking VCE/VM studies completed the General Achievement Test (GAT). While not as glamorous as the formal, the GAT plays a vital role in the VCE/VM assessment process. In a show of camaraderie, our IB students hosted a BBQ lunch to support their peers—an uplifting example of the unity within our senior school.

Brevet Exams and Academic Milestones

This week, we received our Year 9 French Binational Brevet exam results. It is official that the 2025 class of FBN have achieved our highest results ever. Ms Papon and the French Teaching staff will provide more information. On behalf of the school, I would like to congratulate the students on such an outstanding effort. Regardless of the grade received the students have shown such determination, resilience and optimism throughout the stressful exam time. The FBN program is an acceleration program on three levels: language, academic rigour, and three years of curriculum in two and a half years. Congratulations to the parents as well for their support and encouragement. The program is a huge commitment for the whole family.

These results are also a credit to the programs at Camberwell PS and Caulfield JC. Both schools do an incredible job teaching young people bilingual studies and creating a passion for French language and culture.

Looking Ahead: Athletics Carnival

With the Athletics Carnival set for September 5th, now is the perfect time to start training—especially for Freeman House, who are eager to reclaim the House Cup! It takes around 6 weeks of training to see significant benefits, so whether you want to jump further, throw further, jump higher, run faster, or have more endurance; start now!! Perhaps we can find the next Gout Gout.

Campus Developments

I am excited about the upcoming landscaping project between our new building and the oval. Our small, but willing and able Vocational Major class are working towards final designs for an indigenous garden that will integrate the new building landscape with the old quarry face. This will be a transformative addition to our campus.

We also have a group of students who will be organising a working bee for the first week of September. The aim is to rejuvenate the garden beds around the main building and to renovate some of the existing seating. Please stay tuned for more information.

Wishing everyone a restful break. Enjoy the outdoors, recharge, and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 3. Don’t mind me, I will be on the golf course and going skiing.

Warm regards,
Ross Pritchard

Term 2 DARE Year Level Assemblies

Connected and inclusive communities are built when the values of their members align, a shared identity is developed, and a strong sense of belonging and emotional safety is cultivated. At Auburn High School, we are guided by a set of principles that ensure all students are equipped with the skills to be curious and resilient individuals. These principles include the DARE values, Student Code of Conduct, Year Level Statements, Auburn Learner Qualities, Pillars of Wellbeing, and authentic opportunities for students to have voice and agency in their learning and school community.

It is through these values that we support our students in reflecting on their individual strengths, identifying points of connection with their peers, teachers, and school, and developing strategies for social and emotional growth.

Each term, our Student Leadership Team facilitates year-level assemblies. These assemblies are important opportunities to celebrate and acknowledge the learning and growth that has occurred, highlight moments of connection and co-curricular engagement, and recognise how students have demonstrated the values that define our school community. In Terms 2 and 4, these assemblies are especially significant, as students are individually acknowledged with DARE Awards and recognised for achieving an Auburn High School Badge in the areas of Communication, Philanthropy, STEM, Sport, and the Arts.

I continue to be impressed by the wide range of behaviours our students display; demonstrating aspiration in their learning, kindness and respect towards their peers, and responsibility when challenges arise.

Well done on an outstanding Semester 1, I wish everyone a relaxing and joyful break and look forward to seeing you all in Term 3,

Dannielle Gibson

Year 7 ‘Getting Organised’ Peer Support Workshop

Transitioning to high school comes with many new learning experiences. One of the most significant is learning to manage your own schedule: navigating a daily timetable that changes, moving between classrooms, managing subject-specific materials and homework, and meeting various expectations. Learning tools and strategies to stay organised is something we aim to establish early!

To support our Year 7 students in this transition, our Year Level Leaders, Mr Sheidaee and Ms Beck, have developed a colour-coded organisation system to help set students up for a successful Semester 2. Last week, our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders ran a workshop to introduce the system and help Year 7s set up their colour-coded materials.

Students have used the colour system below to code their Semester 2 timetables and subject books. You can support this at home by printing the colour key and placing it on the fridge as a helpful reminder!

Year 8 ‘Upcoming CAMP’

In Week 2 of next term, our Year 8 students will be heading to the Mount Alexandra Adventure Resort from Wednesday 30th July to Friday 1st August.

Registrations and payments are now open via the Parent Portal!
Please ensure all required fields on the consent and medical forms are carefully completed, and payment is finalised. We kindly ask that all forms and payments be submitted by the end of the upcoming school holidays. This will allow us to begin organising cabin and activity groups and finalising key arrangements.

Camp offers students a unique opportunity to:

  • Strengthen friendships and build new connections
  • Develop independence, teamwork, and resilience
  • Challenge themselves through outdoor adventure activities
  • Create lasting memories and enjoy learning in a different environment

Financial Support Options

Families eligible for financial support may use the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) to assist with payment. If you’d like to use your School Saving Bonus (SSB) towards the cost of the Year 8 Camp, please email [email protected] with the following details:

  • Your child’s full name
  • The amount you’d like to allocate from your SSB

The amount left owing will be updated on the Compass event within 5 business days. Once updated, you’ll be able to complete payment and provide consent.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Nicole Marie or Greg Leach  if you need assistance or have any questions about the camp. We’re looking forward to a fantastic Year 8 Camp experience with all our students!

Year 9 Finalising Morrisby Interviews and preparing for Course Counselling

This term, there has been a strong focus on reflecting on our journey as learners in the Junior School, in preparation for course counselling and the transition to Senior School. Students began this reflection in their E4L classes this term, with the idea of Ikigai. Ikigai (生き甲斐) is a Japanese concept that means “a reason for being” or “a reason to get up in the morning.” It’s about finding joy and purpose in life through a meaningful combination of passion, mission, vocation, and profession. Importantly, it’s not just about choosing a career—it’s about discovering what truly matters to you and living a life filled with meaning and joy.

To support our students in exploring their strengths and interests, they have been participating in Morrisby testing and interviews. This valuable program connects students with trained careers counsellors, who guide them through their career profiling data to help them better understand their skills, preferences, and potential career pathways. This process plays a key role in helping students make informed decisions as they begin to select their subjects and programs for the years ahead.

Congratulations to our year 9 French Binational Students who received their Brevet results on Friday evening. Regardless of your score, I hope you are very proud of what you have achieved over the last 2 & ½ years, and I mean, just look at how awesome you are!

Lastly, a big thank you to Ms. Phillipson for planning a great E4L connection workshop, providing students with the opportunity to connect and engage with each other, reflect on our year level statement and do some quick organising of lockers and timetables to reset for semester 2!

Term 2 Learning Behaviour Reports

Every Day Counts

The importance of regular school attendance.

At Auburn High School, we prioritise regular school attendance. We will work with families to ensure students are in class with their peers and teachers and enjoying all the benefits that brings.

Attending school every day means experiencing what counts – the learning, friendship, fun and opportunities that can shape your child’s future.

We understand that there are times when your child will need to miss school but to ensure minimal disruption to their education, please consider scheduling family holidays or medical/dental appointments outside of school time. If your child is well enough to attend but is worried about friendships, schoolwork or exams, please encourage them to come to school. Avoiding school can make these feelings worse and can create a negative pattern of behaviour.

You can check your child’s attendance via the web & phone browser:

If your child is having difficulty attending school, please contact your child’s Tutor Group teacher about getting support.

We know that parents and carers can be juggling challenges daily to get your children to school. If your child must miss school, notify us as soon as possible so we can work together to support them.

Senior Assistant Principal – Teaching & Learning

What an amazing term!! 11 weeks is one big challenge for everyone involved. I’m so proud of our high-quality teaching learning programs that supported our students to close Semester 1. This past two weeks it has been lovely to feel the excitement that has surrounded our start of our new semester in line with new subjects for some of our students. It is so incredible to see how the reset of a semester can support a student to shift their behaviours alongside their goals.

We are really seeing growth in our community. There has been an enormous amount of work put into supporting our Year 9 and 10 students through the counselling program. This has been through a series of webinars and on-site workshops which I thank you, our families, for attending. An enormous thank you to Andrea Ganotis, Leading Teacher of Year 9 & Year 10 Curriculum, who has been reinvigorating our careers education in our Education for Life classes so that students are authentically engaging with their Morrisby profiles as they prepare for subject selection.

Behind the scenes we have been evaluating our curriculum structure and programs so that our students have the best subjects to choose from. We want subjects that foster deep, rich learning, subjects that are going to enable them to be prepared for world beyond Auburn. Our Reimagining Curriculum project was launched over 12 months ago when we anticipated the new implementation of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. With the growth of our school and our student cohorts it was necessary to review our curriculum offerings and ensure that they were not only still in line with student interest, but also to expand these offerings, where possible, to create new and exciting opportunities for our kids. We are so excited to launch these new subjects that our teaching staff have designed this week as students prepare for select their individualised 2026 program. You can find our 2026 Curriculum Handbook on Compass along with our invitation to families to our Senior School Expo in the first week of next term.

Alongside teaching and learning we’ve had several celebrations for our students and that includes a Year 12 formal. It was heartwarming see four tables of teachers to joining the Class of 2025 on the evening, and on the dance floor! There is strong pride in our Year 12 community, and we can’t wait to work with them in the final phase of their schooling journey.

This week we have over 130 Year 10 students completing their Work Experience placements with employers across Melbourne and across the state this program. Our Work experience program ensures that students have on-the-job experience with an industry of their interest so they’re able to experience this firsthand.

Since Monday we’ve had glowing reports from our employers about the high expectation that our students had turning up on time, in correct work uniform and jumping right into any tasks that were shared with them. Our students have been having an array of experiences this week: from making documentaries on the history of the businesses, to completing site inspections with architect firms, blind installation, using accounting software systems and making splints to support patients. It pleases me to know that our students are doing us proud outside our Auburn walls, and we can’t wait to share more of their experiences with you next term when they return.

Our Work Experience program is one that has been redefined and redeveloped this year. We have relocated the time of the year that takes place, strengthening the program ready for our Junior School students to join us in Year 10 in the coming years. We encourage our Year 9 students to start thinking about a placement that they might enjoy next year as they can be quite competitive.

It’s really important to me to acknowledge the work of our Leadership Team. it has been challenging at times due to some missing staff members in a number of portfolios this term and yet I am so proud of what we’ve been able to achieve for our students. Their dedication has meant that our students have not missed an opportunity as a result of any gaps in our staffing model. We are lucky to have a strong community at Auburn who are truly passionate about our students.

The holidays are well and truly deserved by everyone in our community and I’m wishing a safe and restful break with your families. We can’t wait to hear about any holiday adventures, and we are looking forward to starting Term 3 with you soon.

Student Leadership

Our Student Leadership Action Groups have been working tirelessly throughout the term, and we’re excited to take a moment to reflect on some of the fantastic achievements and initiatives they’ve led. Here’s an update from some of our action groups:

House Spirit Team
This term, the House Spirit team launched a House Logos Competition, inviting students to design new logos to represent their houses. While the original deadline was June 27th, we’ve decided to extend the submission window into Term 3 to give more students the opportunity to get involved. Stay tuned for the updated deadline!
Next term, our team’s focus will shift to building house spirit ahead of the Athletics Carnival. We plan to create Compass posts offering students a say in fun side-events to increase engagement and participation.

Wellbeing Action Group
The Wellbeing team has been busy leading a number of important initiatives this term. On May 15th, we celebrated Education Support Staff Day by delivering heartfelt thank-you notes written by students to our incredible ES staff. The group also played a key role in the school’s IDAHOBIT Day celebrations, helping to run inclusive and engaging activities that promoted diversity and belonging at Auburn High School. We’re looking forward to bringing even more positive energy and initiatives to the school in Term 3.

Sustainability Action Group
Our Sustainability team has made amazing progress this semester. They rolled out an E4L lesson on sustainability, educating students about how to reduce their environmental footprint and correctly sort waste. In Term 2, they reinforced this message by placing helpful bin posters around the school. Looking ahead, the group is now busy planning a Working Bee in early September, in collaboration with Mr Pritchard. This event will invite students and their families to come together on a weekend to help clean and improve our school grounds.

We’re incredibly proud of the leadership, teamwork and initiative shown by all members of the Student Leadership Team this semester. We can’t wait to see what’s next!

World’s Greatest Shave

World’s Greatest Shave (WGS) was a huge success! The event which aims to raise money and awareness for the Leukaemia foundation, in their fight against blood cancers, took place at our school on Tuesday 24/6. We had an anonymous donation of $5k come through at the last second, which jumped our total funds raised to $6800, well over our target of $5000. This resulted in us being able to see our Principal, Mr Pritchard, shave his head!! The air was full of excitement with huge crowds gathering at the student entrance to witness the brave participants who decided to shave/cut their hair for such a great cause!

A big shout-out to the three Pappas brothers – who all shaved their head together!

And an extra shout-out to Peta L (Y7) who decided to part with her long hair by shaving her head, and who also managed to raise over $1200 for our team!

Thank you to all those who participated and/or helped make this event such a success!

Push-Up Challange

The Push-Up Challenge, which started on the 4th of June and ended on the 26th of June, was a huge success, bringing our school together to raise awareness for mental health in Australia. The goal was to complete 3,214 pushups (or half target) over 23 days, with many students enthusiastically taking part to achieve this.

As part of the challenge, on the 18th of June, Headspace Hawthorn visited AHS to run a lunchtime session. They engaged students with a range of fun challenges, including a pushup competition that brought the competitive spirit across all year levels. There were some awesome prizes up for grabs, including movie vouchers and Blitz Bar vouchers, which added extra excitement to the event. It was a fantastic event and we are very grateful to Sara and Zoya for their time in supporting mental health and wellbeing at our school.

Also, a BBQ was held on the 20th of June to raise funds, bringing our school community together. This event was supported by Henry Shriffers, a former Camberwell Grammar student, who was eager to contribute by assisting with the BBQ.

Over the past 23 days, AHS completed an incredible 31,270 push-ups, with each one raising awareness for mental health in Australia and contributing to the House Cup. A special congratulations to Winton, who led the way with 9,994 push-ups!

Xavier R. and Kenrick, our Push-Up Challenge Student Ambassadors from Year 12, along with the Student Leadership Team are proud of everyone’s effort and support throughout the challenge.

Outstanding Brevet Results for Auburn High School – Class of 2025 Shines!

We are thrilled to announce exceptional results in this year’s Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB). Our students have truly excelled, making 2025 a record-breaking year for Auburn High School!

91% pass rate (20 out of 22 students) – an outstanding achievement reflecting the dedication, effort, and resilience of our students and teaching team.

86% of students earned a distinction (Mention), and 73% achieved a Mention Bien or Très Bien, placing our results well above the national average.

A new honour was introduced this year: “Félicitations du jury”, awarded to students scoring above 90%. We are incredibly proud to celebrate five students who reached this exceptional level of excellence!

This is the strongest DNB performance in the past nine years, with a record 45.5% of students earning a Mention Très Bien!

These remarkable outcomes reflect not only the hard work of our students but also the unwavering support from families and the commitment of our French Binational team.

Congratulations once again to all our Brevet candidates – we are proud of each and every one of you!

What’s happening in our French classrooms?

Year 8 French: Bandes dessinées

This term, our Year 8 French students worked in groups to create their own comic strips (bandes dessinées). Each group wrote a short story using topics they’ve studied in class this year.

Their stories started with two friends talking at home in the morning before school. On the way to school, they discussed the weather. At school, they talked with friends about their timetable, favourite (and least favourite!) subjects, and teachers.

In the afternoon, since the weather was nice, the characters did something fun outside—like a game, walk or sport.

Students then performed their comic strips out loud in French. It was a great way to practise speaking, be creative and work together. Well done, Year 8!

Year 7 French Binational Science Class

In French Binational Science, our Year 7 students have been exploring the concept of vitesse des objets en mouvement – the speed of moving objects. Their challenge? To measure how fast a toy car travels!

Working in teams, students were asked to follow the full scientific method:

  • Formulate a hypothesis
  • Design and carry out an experiment
  • Measure physical quantities accurately
  • Present their results using correct units
  • Draw a conclusion and check if their hypothesis was correct

This hands-on investigation allowed students to develop important scientific skills while working collaboratively—all in French! Félicitations à tous!

How to be awesome at self-care

Coming to the end of Term 2, it is a good idea to take some time to look after your body, your mind and your emotions. Being able to relax is super-important for health and wellbeing. Here are some tips for building healthy habits and recharging your physical, mental and emotional health.

  1. Take time for whatever makes you feel good, such as listening to your favourite songs, making a cup of tea or watching a funny video. Baking is also a great (and delicious) self-care activity.
  2. Write it down. Setting up and keeping track of your goals or writing down what you are grateful for that day (as well as what you found difficult) can help work through your feelings and recognise your achievements.
  3. Log out to chill out. Take a break from scrolling every so often by going for a walk or catching up with friends in person. Spending an hour a week on at least one screen-free hobby and leaving your phone outside the bedroom are scientifically proven ways that improve mental wellbeing.
  4. Try out some positive self-talk. Focus on what you love about yourself and make affirming statements like ‘I’m doing the best I can’ or ‘I don’t feel great right now, and that’s okay’.
